A friend of mine tried to powerbrake his '86 K10 with 32's and broke the yoke of the 10 bolt rear. I have a 2WD truck 12 bolt, can the yokes be interchanged between these?

Nope. I tried to put my 10 bolt yoke on my 12 bolt to take advantage of the bigger u-joint, but they require different pinion seals. The splines are the same but the 10 bolt yoke cant go on the 12 bolt far enough because it contacts the seal. The 12 bolt yoke would leave a gap between the yoke and the seal. I don't know if the seals are interchangeable, but it might be worth looking into being that the seals are about $3 and the yokes about $80.

Yes they can. I did it on mine when I swapped in a 12 bolt. You have to use a special oil seal. Here's the NAPA part # CR . Oh yeah and because it's special so is the price, somewhere around 16.00 But like ya said still cheaper than a new yoke. But remember that 12 bolts and 10 bolts use different U-joints. And I was putting a 10 bolt yoke into 12 bolt so I could still retain the same driveshaft. Kinda sounds like your trying the other way around now that I reread it. So maybe not.

They also make a trick u-joint for a 10 to 12 bolt swap.

I'm running a 10 bolt yoke on my 12 bolt. I'm using the same seal as on the front and it works great.

Thats what I did. When I was doing the front gear swap and 12 bolt install I found out that the yoke was different, so I put the 10 bolt yoke on, and used the seal for the front and worked great and no leaks. I like running the bigger u-joint. 12 bolt u-joints are really small.

I'm doing a 10 to 12 swap right now. Can someone tell me the size difference between the two u-joints and why chevy did that?

I'm also doing a 12 bolt swap into my 86. The 12 bolt is out of a 79 and the u-joint is the same size as the current one in my 86. maybe someone already swapped the yoke? I dont know. Isn't the size difference drastic enought that you shluld be able to notice it?

Damnit! why didn't someone tell me that before? Now I'm stuck with $30 u-joints that are hard to find and weaker than the 10 bolts. Oh well, you live you learn!

i just did a 10 bolt yoke to 12 bolt swap i used the front seal that came with my master rebuild kit and while i had the axel on stands with the snout facing the floor i poured 1/2 a gallon of gear oil in it and let it sit in vertical stance for a hour and it didn't leak at all. say it for the seal. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

whata bout when going from 12 or 10 over to 14 FF ?

any possibility of yoke swaps on thesE ?

trying to avoid bastard U joint going form 10 bolt to 14 FF, evne if have to use yoke on the 14, i dont care.

hmmm...

anyways, i have a 10 bolt yoke if you need one(but would be more than the 16 bucks for the special seal) to get the yoke to you by the time the deal was over.

good luck
